Lesson 5 The Stages of SleepThe different stages of sleep were discovered by attaching electrodes to the body and measuring the tiny electric signals from the brain, the muscles and the eyes. In the first 4 stages of sleep the signals from the eyes and muscles are very similar to when we are awake. These sleep stages are called non rapid eye movement sleep stages, or non-REM sleep. Stage 1 of non-REM sleep is the period when change from being awake to being asleep. The muscle movements and brain wave patterns begin to slow down. In stage 2 the eye movements stop, heart rate slows and the body temperature drops. Brain waves also slow down. In stage 3 blood pressure drops, and breathing slows down, and the brain waves slow further. Stage 4 is the deepest stage of sleep. This is the period when we are the hardest to wake up. The brain waves are at their slowest, and their is no eye movement. In stages 3 and 4 of non-REM sleep we are very deeply asleep, and these stages are essential for restoring our energy, and also because during these stages some important growth hormones are released by the body. The 5th stage of sleep is called Rapid Eye Movement or REM sleep. This is the stage where we do most of our dreaming. There is intense brain wave activity and rapid eye movement, but the other body muscles are almost paralyzed. The breathing becomes irregular, fast and shallow. It is thought that this is the time when the brain organizes it's information, and the parts of the brain associated with learning and thinking need REM sleep in order to operate effectively. A sleep cycle consists of the 4 stages of non-REM sleep followed by the REM sleep stage. In total each sleep cycle takes between 90 and about 110 minutes, and the cycle is repeated over and over while we are asleep. In successive cycles the period of non-REM sleep gets shorter, and the period of REM sleep gets longer. Now we are going to have a look at some common sleep patterns and problems. |
