Lesson 6 Sleep PatternsDifferent people have different sleep patterns. Our sleep patterns naturally change as we grow from babies, to teenagers, adults, through middle age to getting old. As well as these natural changes we may become susceptible to some of the sleeping disorders or illnesses associated with sleeping. Even people who are healthy can suffer from sleeping problems from time to time. These may vary from waking up in the middle of the night, to falling asleep during the day, or not being able to go to sleep when you want to. Getting enough good quality sleep is vital if you want to perform at your best in the things that you do. By using what we have already learned about the sleep cycle, we are now going to explore some of the common problems and the way that sleep pattern changes might effect different age groups. Most researchers agree that teenagers need 9 to 9.5 hours of sleep a night. However many teenager's sleep clocks naturally move later, so that they get sleepy later in the evening, and don't wake up as early in the morning. It is common for teenagers not to feel sleepy until 11pm or even later. This means that to get the required amount of sleep to function well, they should sleep until 8am or later. Unfortunately they have to leave for school much earlier than this, so they do not get enough sleep. If this continues for a 5 day school week, then they have a very large sleep debt by the end of the week. Researchers have attributed many of the physical and mental problems that are common in teenagers to this sleep debt problem. These problems include acne and other skin problems and inability to concentrate or learn effectively. In middle age a hectic work schedule and non-work responsibilities often lead to a normal sleep period of as little as six hours. It is generally believed that adults need between 7 and 9 hours of sleep every night to function at their peak potential. On top of not getting enough sleep normally, worries can interfere with sleep, leading to feeling sleepy or falling asleep during less busy periods at work. This will often happen around the middle of the afternoon. In older folk it is less common to have problems sleeping. In fact it is common for older people to go to sleep quite early. One of the reasons for this is that they are less active, which means that their body temperature can easily drop, which triggers sleep. However this also means that they often fall asleep during the day or while doing non-physical things like reading or watching television. This can mean that they have no sleep debt when they go to bed, so can then have trouble going to sleep. Some researchers believe that the need for stage 3 and 4 non-REM sleep is reduced as people get older. This means that more of the sleeping time is spent in lighter sleep, so older people may wake up more easily during the night. However the researchers also believe that the total amount of sleep required does not reduce as you get older. Next we will look at sleep patterns that are not related to age. We will start with the patterns related to doing shift work. |
