Lesson 9 Stress and SleepWhen we are stressed, whether it is from overwork or even just preparing for an important meeting, there are a number of things that happen that can make it difficult to sleep. When the body is stressed, it releases various hormones. One of the functions of these hormones is to stimulate us and make us more alert, so that we can handle whatever the cause of the stress is. Cortisol is one of the key hormones that affects sleep. High levels of cortisol keep us alert. The body usually stops producing cortisol when it is tired, but stress can override this, making it difficult to sleep when we have been under stress. Another similar hormone is corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). Recent studies have shown that from middle-age people may become increasingly sensitive to CRH and also to some extent to cortisol. A study comparing people with insomnia to those without it found that those with a very high level of sleep disturbance also had the highest cortisol levels, and those levels increased in the evening and night, suggesting that these people may have a problem with their stress response functions. It is clear that when we are under stress, worried about something, or even have just been active before we go to bed, these hormones will make it less easy to sleep. Next we will sum up what we can do to sleep better. |
