Lesson 3 What is Sleep DebtWe have something that is very like a sleep bank within our systems. If we put regular deposits of a lot of sleep into our sleep bank, then we are able to operate with less sleep for a few days. Similarly, if we have had several days of reduced sleep, it may take a few days of having more sleep than normal in order to recover. Some researchers have come to the conclusion that westerners today get about 1.5 hours a day less sleep than they did 100 years ago. Some have also concluded that this is probably resulting in a general loss of both efficiency and creativity. There are other schools of thought that believe the human animal can not only survive but perform at peak efficiency with only 5 hours of sleep a night, provided that the various natural rhythms or clocks are all in sync. When animals or people build up a large sleep debt, they can no longer function normally. Initially they lose the ability to think logically, then large mood swings are usually apparent, and later physical functions like body temperature can not be maintained. The body's immune system often breaks down and infections or fevers can take over. The way that our sleep bank works is quite interesting. When we have been awake for some time we develop a desire to sleep. If we are in a position to sleep, we fall asleep easily, and stay asleep more easily than when we are well rested. One of the agents responsible for this feeling of tiredness or sleepiness is adenosine. The level of adenosine in our bodies increases over time when we are awake, and decreases over time while we are asleep. As the level rises during the day we feel more and more need for sleep, and then after we have had enough sleep and the levels have fallen, we wake up. Incidentally the way that caffeine works is by blocking the connections in the brain that detect adenosine, and thereby preventing the tired feeling from happening.
We can override the effects of our sleep clock by having sleep in our sleep bank, but eventually we have to pay the sleep bank back. The next natural sleep rhythm we will look at is our body temperature rhythm. |
