Sleep Apnea, Signs and Symptoms

Sleep apnea has a number of symptoms and results which can affect Home, family and work life in a serious way.

One of these is excessive sleepiness, which makes driving a car very dangerous. Other symptoms are loud snoring, and reduced interest in sex. Irritability, forgetfulness and reduced intellectual ability are common, and may appear to others as symptoms of lack of effort, laziness or incompetence.

There is also some evidence that sleep apnea has a negative effect on health and is a contributing factor in depression, hypertension and some heart disorders.

In one case study a patient suffering from sleep apnea explained that over a seven year period she had little sleep. She suffered from heart palpitations, after she had fallen asleep. She would wake up frightened by the palpitations, causing adrenaline to flow, resulting in a panic attack. As a result she did not want to go to sleep. Towards the end of the seven year period she would do anything in her power not to go to sleep, or even to bed.

The result of this is that she found it very difficult to get up in the morning, and her family would never talk to her in the morning, until she spoke to them, as they never knew what sort of reaction they would get. Sometimes her husband had to physically lift her up and take her to the shower, and her children started to put ice cubes on her to wake her in the morning. Not unexpectedly, she was also very moody and touchy.

Eventually her husband who had been very supportive started to become tired and frustrated at his lack of ability to help.

In another case study a man explained that in his case he wanted to do exercise but was too tired. He had a lack of interest in everything, and lack of enthusiasm. At the office he had a lack of concentration, which caused his work to suffer, and he started to worry about that. At night he snored very heavily, and gasping for breath caused his body to convulse and jump. His wife found it horrific because he would stop breathing.

There are a number of characteristics that many of the people with sleep apnea have in common. A high proportion are over forty years old, overweight, snore while sleeping, and experience sleepiness or even falling asleep during the day. Also more males than females suffer from sleep apnea.
